Taking the Rega RP1 for a Spin

With a handful of records at the ready and the demonstration suites rigged up for a serious spinning session it was time to really put the Rega RP1 through the paces. We have been selling the Rega RP1 turntable for a while now and it has long been a favourite of ours. There was no reason to put it to the test again as we know what a great turntable it is we just love using it.

The Rega RP1 picked up a What Hi-Fi Best Buy Award last year, and has made it a brace this year with the Best Buy Turntable up to under £400 award, and with very good reason.

Rega RP1

The Rega RP1 is one of the easiest turntables to set up and it really couldn’t be any simpler. You can get it from box to first record in a matter of seconds. It has a pre-fitted cartridge and all you need to do is set the counterweight in the marked position, set the bias to 2, pop on the platter and away you go.

The minimalistic design of the Rega RP1 means there is not a lot to work out and it is simple to use. It is built to last, and its sonically excellent. For a budget turntable you don’t really want anything else.  There is more to the look than style alone. By stripping away all but the essentials, the cost savings have been put into higher quality components and you get a lot of turntable for your money.

The Rega RP1 offers a specification well above its price point, and features a Rega RB101 tonearm, Ortofon OM5e moving magnet cartridge, precision main bearing and sub-platter assembly, low vibration motor and a new Phenolic resin flywheel effect platter for superb speed stability. If you want to go the full Monty, upgrade with a Rega RP1 performance pack and you’ll have a turntable that can hold its own against decks at twice the price.

The Rega RP1 is easy to use by all the family, and is the perfect way to rekindle your love of vinyl without breaking the bank.

Doug Brady Hi-Fi Verdict – Great style, great sound and a great spec. The Rega RP1 is our Best Buy Budget Turntable of 2011.
