Vita R1 MkII Review

Vita Audio is best known for its range of loudspeakers; however its venture into the DAB radio market has seen the brand become a household name, in no small part due to the exceptional Vita R1, and now the Vita R1 MkII DAB/FM Radio.

Shortly after its release, the Vita R1 was referred to as the “Aston Martin of DAB radios” according to the Daily Telegraph, but the updates make the Vita R1 MkII the DB9 Volante. The mark II version of this exceptional digital radio adds more than just a little trim, with a host of new features to make it even more attractive, and eminently more practical.

For a start, the Vita R1 MkII is now ready to receive DAB+ broadcasts in addition to its DAB/FM tuner with RDS, and the addition of a clip on backpack battery makes this portable digital radio one of the most practical to use. The backpack will give up to 20 hours of play, and with the option of a retro hand stitched leather carry case, it is perfect for picnics, camping trims and beachfront BBQ’s.

The looks may be similar to the origina, but the Vita R1 MkII boasts a bigger and brighter display, with intelligent brightness controls to match ambient light levels. The Vita R1 MkII is more versatile too, with a switchable auxiliary input to play directly from an iPod/iPhone or iPad, with excellent sound through its high-fidelity speaker driver.

Sound quality is first rate as you would expect from Vita Audio, with tight bass, a well balanced midrange, and well controlled treble. Add tone control, a loudness option, dual alarms and cool rotodial control, and the Vita R1 MkII is a winning package.

Doug Brady Hi-Fi Verdict – Unbeatable value and impressive sound make the Vita R1 MkII Our favourite DAB radio under £200.
