Rega turntables have a strong reputation for quality, and despite the latest Rega RP1 being a budget deck it still has all the hallmarks of high- end Rega tyurntables, and offers exceptional quality which belies its low price tag.
The Rega RP1 is the replacement for the now 4-year old Rega P1 turntable, but the Rega RP1 is far from just an upgrade of an old model.
For the Rega RP1 everything has been stripped back to produce an ultra sleek and stylish minimalist deck, free from many of the embellishments offered on competitor brands. By cutting back on the non essentials, it has allowed Rega to put the savings into higher quality components, including a newly developed hand assembled RB101 tonearm. Similar in looks to the Rega RB100 tonearm in the P1, Rega has used the latest Hi-Tec design to reduce its weight considerably for greater cartridge stability. A one-piece construction keeps resonance to the bare minimum, and for ease of installation the Ortofon OM5e moving magnet cartridge is pre-fitted making the Rega RP1 a breeze to set up. All components are constructed to an exceptionally high standard, none more so that a new ultra low vibration motor, which would not be out of place on a turntable at many times the cost.
The Rega RP1 offers a brand new platter material, albeit one which was originally developed many decades ago. The flywheel effect platter is constructed from phenolic resin; an exceptionally resilient thermoplastic previously known as Bakerlite. Despite its positively ancient beginnings, this modernized thermoplastic has considerable advantages over modern plastics, being more stable, stiffer and longer lasting, and ensures excellent speed stability. It is arguably just as good as a glass platter to all but the most discerning disc spinner.
The standard Rega RP1 is an impressive package, which can be improved further still with the RP1 Turntable Performance Pack. The RP1 Turntable Performance Pack improves speed stability further still thanks to a higher spec drive belt, with a Rega Bias 2 hand assembled moving magnet cartridge using technology frequently seen in cartridges at many times the price. The elliptical stylus and parallel wound coils are coupled with a lighter design which ensures tighter bass and outstanding stereo imagery, and a 100% natural wool mat improves coupling between platter and record. If you are looking for a budget turntable that will stand the test of time and punches way above its belt, you can't go wrong with the Rega Rp1.
